The Warriors

What a strange film.
I'm quite intrigued by how much effort went into designing all those gang that never interacted with the Warriors at all. I like how we don't learn more than two people's names until the credits. I thought it would be much different but it really was just a "watch this gang fight some dudes on their way home" movie. At least it was fun to make fun of it while watching.
And I like the baseball gang. Halloween costume for this year methinks.

Enter the Dragon

bruce lee is a real cutie patootie tbh
also why was every single sound effect three million decibels louder than it had to be

Galaxy Quest

god what a film. its been too long since ive seen it. unironically so sweet and also i love nerds

Back to the Future Part II

call me ridiculous but i actually really dig this. the constant references to the first movie. the blatant reuse of tropes and plot points. its silly and i like it

Clue

favorite movie of all time tbh. endlessly quotable

Ballerina

It's a kid's movie so I can't be too critical of it. It was a pretty fun watch. Mostly watched it because I swear I've seen half the movie through instagram reels. silly and predictable but what else would you expect.
i will say that the pop songs make the movie feel a little anachronistic. could we not afford a soundtrack or something

AKIRA

I think this movie is incredible, and it gets even more interesting when you think about the context and the metaphors. I mean. It's a movie that was made thirty years after the Nagasaki bombings that is set thirty years after a massive war that necessitated the rebuilding of all of Tokyo. So much of the subplot is about political and military power. You could write an endless analysis of this film and the analogy of nuclear weaponry. I also find the sound design of this film to be absolutely incredible. The use of intriguing sounds (Gamelan chimes as a recurring motif, the classic breathing in the fight theme, etc etc) is so perfect but what really gets me is the use of SILENCE. This film knows when to be dead silent and it really adds to the atmosphere.
I will say that the movie is not quite as good as the manga series, particularly when it comes to the direct reference to politics. The manga addresses it directly, and also a few key characters are completely cut from the film. Still, it's stunningly animated, and I think one of the most fascinating body horror films in animation. It doesn't skimp on gore or horrifying imagery.

Can of Worms

My favorite part of this film was the effects. It's a lovely blend of computer and puppetry that makes it look WAY cooler than if the whole thing was CGI. Silly, and predictable, but also fun to watch.
Also the Bom was NASTY ew ew ew ew

Phantom of the Paradise

oh my GOD.
This movie RIPPED. The cinematography was really good, the character designs were honestly super fun, and there's not a whole ton of guesswork or careful attention you need to pay because the movie lays it all out for you. It's pretty clear what's happening. I really love how no matter what sort of catastrophe is happening onstage, the audience (and most of the band) continue dancing and singing.
Also the Phantom's look is doing something irreparable to my brain

Lieutenant Kije

I watched this film because I absolutely adore the score. Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kizhe Symphonic Suite my absolute beloved. The music is very good although a little hard to hear in the film because of the audio quality.
Altogether a fascinating plot. This movie, while short, can be a little bit slow, but it's also very silly to me. It is a story of miscommunication, overreacting, and unexpected twists. I was fascinated by the gay kiss scenes because this movie is from the 30s but yknow that effeminate tiger-cape man didn't seem to mind. All of this miscommunication, of course, over a guy yelping when his lover pinches his ass. What a whirlwind.

Rock & Rule

FASCINATING film. The animation is so smooth and also so clunky. The characters are all beautiful and also horribly grotesque. Almost nothing happens in this movie but also everything is happening all the time. The voices are great and the line delivery fluctuates. I could never predict what was gonna happen next. There’s a reference to The Shining. The soundtrack has Cheap Trick songs on it. It's thirty-four left hooks to the face followed by one unexpected violent grab to the balls. I'm obsessed.
